What you should know about Leather Cord

Greek or Indian Leather Cord?

Two sources of leather cord dominate the market in USA. One is Greece, the other is Indian. The Greeks have longer experience--they were the first to start producing it and Greek leather cord is known for its superior quality. It is also very expensive.
However, the Indian manufacturers are catching up, and some established producers, like the one who has supplied my business with leather cording for several years now, offer excellent products at a very competitive price. Nevertheless, some customers are willing to pay the much higher price of the Greek leather cords. Of course it is up to you to decide.

Licorice 10X6 mm leather cord In the last few years thick strips of Oval Leather Cord, have become very popular for making Bracelets. Because it resembles Licorice candy, some people call it just that: Licorice leather cord. The cord is not round, rather it is rectangular, 10 X 7mm. A complete line of components has been specially designed for this kind of leather cording.

Size, colors, types of leather cords

Leather-Cord-Online offers plain round, flat, braided and barbed wire look leather cords

Size is available from 0.5 mm to 6 mm for round leather cord and from 2 mm up to 10 mm braided.

However the size (thickness) of leather cord is not accurate and it is possible that your second order may be a little thinner or thicker than the first order.

This happens because leather is a natural material, and as such it can expand or shrink due to moisture, heat and storage. Also the processing is a factor that affects the accuracy of the size.

Greek leather cord

Leather cord comes in many colors and can be dyed or left untreated or natural. Untreated leather cord is just that. No color is added and it can be from very light brown to very dark, depending on the natural color of the hide.

How to tell Good Quality Leather Cord

Good quality leather cords do not have bumps, specks of dust, cuts, or other imperfections. It should feel smooth and consistent when you run it through your fingers. Some people prefer very soft leather cord which usually comes from the belly part of the hide. Personally, I like to work with a little stiffer quality cords because they are easier to work with, hold their shape and are more durable. Strength is another quality factor. Good quality leather cord will stand reasonable pulls and the thicker ones will be impossible to break by pulling.

What you can do with Leather Cord

Make Leather Jewelry of course! Leather cord is a durable crafting material that can be used in jewelry, making necklaces, bracelets, earrings, braids, bolo ties, as well as for decorating and many other crafts. All the parts Findings that you need are available at Leather-Cord-Online.

The 1 mm cord is perfect for use with lightweight beads, or only a few beads, or in multi-strand configurations. It is strong for its size, and it s a delight to work with when you want to achieve an elegant look.

The 1.8/2 mm cord is considered standard size and great for all pendant-style necklaces as well as larger beads. It can be braided, macram\u00e9, you name it! It's super sturdy and it takes a lot to break it, so it's great even for kids' jewelry. One of our most popular bracelets when we used to sell at craft shows was a simple three-strand braid of 1.8 mm leather, with three to five ceramic beads braided into the center.

Newer and quite popular at the moment is the thicker cord, 3 mm up to 6 mm! We've been seeing a lot of simple bracelets consisting of just a strand of this, either the smooth or bolo style (Today most people call it braided), sometimes with a charm attached. The thick cord makes great choker-style necklaces, and it has a very bold look that appeals to men.
You can use end crimp coils to finish your necklace. This requires only a pair of pliers--or you can use end caps that you attach with super glue.

Speaking of the thick bolo-style leather cord, there still the traditional use for it: Bolo Ties! We have all the findings you need to create your own custom bolo ties and the leather comes in a great variety of colors and color combinations.
