His name derives from the Latin word meaning desire and he is often shown shooting an arrow to inspire romantic love. He was derived from his counterpart Eros, who, in Ancient Greece was the god of sexual love and beauty. In some of the myths Eros was a primordial god, while in others, he was the son of the deities Aphrodite and Ares who were the counterparts of Venus and Mars.
